I recently came across the new XReal S1, the smart glasses from XReal (REAL, Inc.), and they certainly represent an interesting evolution within the virtual display ecosystem. This new S1 version comes with improved technical specifications and a more competitive price, further strengthening the appeal of a brand already recognized for its focus on augmented reality applied to entertainment and content creation.

The XReal S1 features 1200p HD resolution, a 52-degree field of view, and the X1 chip, which is also found in other models from the brand. This combination delivers a crisp, smooth, and stable visual experience, ideal for extended use of digital content. In terms of performance, they are clearly designed to function as a personal virtual display, rather than as a mere experimental gadget.

One of the features that caught my attention the most is the new content conversion capability—specifically, converting 2D images to 3D—which runs directly from the headset. This feature significantly enhances the level of immersion and opens up new possibilities for enjoying movies, video games, and multimedia experiences without the need for complex setups.

In addition, the XReal S1 can be paired with the XReal Eye device, which adds advanced augmented reality capabilities, and features enhanced audio output with Sound by Bose—a key feature that directly enhances the sensory experience and reduces friction by eliminating the need for external headphones.

In terms of design, it’s clear that the XReal S1 isn’t intended for everyday use like the Ray-Ban Meta or Pickle 1. Their focus is more functional than aesthetic, making them an ideal device for long trips, airports, gaming sessions, watching sports, or consuming content on the go. In that sense, they fulfill their role as an immersive entertainment tool very well.

They are currently available on Amazon and at the official XReal store for approximately $449, which puts them in an attractive price range given their technical capabilities.

The XReal S1 isn't intended to replace everyday smart glasses, but rather to establish itself as a high-quality portable virtual display. From a UX perspective, its goal is clear: to maximize immersion, reduce technical friction, and deliver powerful visual experiences in specific contexts.

While there is still a gap between these devices and widespread adoption, features such as 2D-to-3D conversion, premium audio integration, and a more affordable price suggest that the future of virtual displays isn't that far off. The XReal S1 is a good example of how augmented reality can evolve from a futuristic concept into a practical, enjoyable tool that is becoming increasingly accessible to end users.
